Petabytes of information, predictive analytics, visualizations of global trends and activity…what does it all mean to the people producing all this information? The Human Face of Big Data, a project by Against All Odds Productions and sponsored by EMC, aims to tell some of the human stories revealed from massive database clusters. With the term Big Data becoming increasingly ubiquitous and misunderstood, the project offers answers to two key questions: where is all the information coming from, and how does it effect our daily lives?

The Human Face of Big Data is led by photojournalists Rick Smolan and Jennifer Erwitt, whose global advocacy projects draw from crowdsourced contributions as well as dedicated teams of journalists, researchers, and photographers, utilizing storytelling techniques both traditional and cutting-edge. The ongoing project takes a number of forms: visualizations and infographics online, a mobile app that allows individuals to compare personal preferences and activities to global trends, video vignettes, and a hard-bound book of photography and research that vividly illustrates Big Data’s impact around the world. The book will be published in November, but you can get a sneak peek today in a gallery on Fortune Magazine’s website.

More video and visualizations from the project can be found at EMC’s The Human Face of Big Data site.
